Yerba mate blending options

According to traditional Guarani herb-lore, yerba mate acts as a catalyst to enhance the properties of other herbs. Many blends are available on the market. You can also acquire your own herbs and experiment. The bombilla is a great tool for trying out your own unique concoctions. You can even grow your own herbs and/or learn to wildcraft.  No matter where you live, there’s probably a variety of tasty and healing herbs within a short stroll from your home.  Wildcrafting is a great opportunity to get to know your local flora.  Consult an expert if you are unsure of a plant’s identity or use. In addition to wildcrafting, here’s a few of the more common herbs and flavours you can get at any natural food store or grow in your backyard. Toss them into your French press, or sprinkle them atop the loose yerba in your mate gourd. Diced fresh ginger root, Dried orange peel, Mint, Tulsi (holy basil), Lemongrass/lemon verbena, Chamomile, Rooibos, Indian chai spices, Stevia leaf, Licorice root, Green tea and Coffee.

Maintain Energy and Alertness with less caffeine

How can yerba mate keep me healthy and active?
Mate contains three xanthines: caffeine, theobromine and theophylline, the main xanthine being caffeine. Caffeine content varies between 0.7% and 1.7% of dry weight (compared with up to 3.2% for ground coffee).
Yerba mate connoisseurs have coined the term "mateine" due to scientific studies regarding the unique biochemical effects that the caffeine has when bonded in the yerba plant and it has become a synonym for caffeine as a result (like theine and guaranine).

Studies of yerba mate have shown preliminary evidence that mate is different from other plants containing caffeine most significantly in its effects on muscle tissue, as opposed to those on the central nervous system, which are similar to those of other natural stimulants. The three xanthines present in mate have been shown to have a relaxing effect on smooth muscle tissue, and a stimulating effect on myocardial (heart) tissue.

Mate also contains powerful antioxidants and vitamins and minerals including elements such as potassium, magnesium and manganese. These trace elements re vital for efficient metabolism and yerba mate is a rare source for many. It also aides in weight loss.

For New Zealanders who are accustomed to drinking tea and coffee yerba mate in a tea pot or tea bag can provide a plesant change. New products are coming to market in the energy drink market which will make drinking yerba mate more mainstream. One company Agua Mate Limited distributes the ingredient (yerba mate extract) for maximum benefit.
